What Is Follicle Tracking?
Follicle tracking is a service which allows women to know if and when exactly they ovulate. Follicles are fluid-filled sacs which develop on the ovary and contain the egg. For a woman to ovulate, the egg must be released from this follicle and journey along the fallopian tube.
How Follicle Tracking Works
Follicle tracking is a series of vaginal ultraound scans which usually take between 5 and 10 minutes to perform. Generally starting around day 9, to assess how the follicles are developing, scanning continues until the follicle(s) have disappeared and ovulation has occurred. We then advise our couple to have sexual intercourse that evening. Follicle tracking is a natural method of assisted conception as it simply optimises the timing of the sperm and egg to meet. If, however, a couple have discovered that the semen quality is suboptimal, then we will schedule an Intrauterine Insemination (IUI).
Who Needs Follicle Tracking?
Follicle tracking is suggested to women who don’t know when they are ovulating, women who don’t know if they are ovulating at all, women who have had many early miscarriages or women who are on clomid.
